The Order of Christian Initiation is the process through which people of the age of discretion and catechesis, children approximately seven years and older (OCIC) or adults (OCIA), walk through different steps in their journey of faith to discern the presence and action of God in their lives, learn the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church, mature their decision to join the Christian community and eventually receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
Candidates, called catechumens, work with a priest and members of the parish that help and guide them through the process. The length of this period might vary depending on each catechumen’s circumstances and discernment process. Once ready, through the Order of Election the catechumens publicly express their desire to join the Church, typically during the first Sunday of Lent. The sacraments of initiation are then celebrated for all catechumens during Easter Vigil Liturgy on Holy Saturday.
Regardless of where you are in your personal journey of faith, we invite you to join and walk this path to learn more about the traditions and foundations of our core beliefs, rituals and life in community. You’ll be glad to find other members of our parish and staff have also gone through this process, and might feel relief when you see that many of the questions you have are common and resonate with the experience of people in our community. Let us share the treasure of our faith with you and discover together how God becomes present in our lives through the mysteries it has entrusted to his Church.
Candidates begin preparation for the Order of Christian Initiation in September and continue through Lent. Classes are generally held once weekly during that time.
